AUSTRALIAN rugby league legends Mal Meninga, Trevor Gillmeister, Allan Langer and Adrian Lam are in New Ireland conducting a leadership programme.
Presented by Meninga, the three-part programme, sponsored by Lihir gold mine owner, Newcrest, involves coaching clinics, community visits, leadership sessions, employee functions and charity fund-raising events for all Lihir Gold employees and stakeholders as well as the Lihir community.
This is the programme’s second visit to the site, and the third and final segment will be held towards the end of the year.
In their first visit, the league greats met with the community at the Palie Catholic mission station, apprentices at the Lihir Technical Training Centre and held coaching clinics for local children.
Meninga told The National that the trips are worthwhile as they are using high-profile rugby
league legends to reinforce the concept of value systems into communities.
“The value system is an important part of Papua New Guinea’s culture. We have value systems in sports, when conducting business activities, etc.
“We have to reinforce these value systems in our communities,” he said.
