Men’s football team miss spot in gold medal playoff

THE national men’s football team fell short of a spot in the gold-medal playoff following a 0-2 loss to the New Zealand’s Under-23 side in Apia, Samoa, yesterday.
PNG will go through to the bronze medal playoff after finishing as Group A runners-up behind New Zealand. New Zealand go through to Saturday’s final.
A heated first half ended with New Zealand leading 1-0.
PNG pressed hard in their second-half efforts but after warnings and a yellow card, match officials were left with little choice but to give Alwin Komolong his marching orders, forcing PNG to finish the match a man down. After an almost scoreless second half, New Zealand netted their second goal to seal the win.
PNG will face Tonga in their final pool match on Thursday.
Meanwhile, rain continued to pour throughout the match between the Solomon Islands and American Samoa. The Solomon Islands came out strong, producing a 3-0 scoreline at the break.
The race was on, as goal after goal was scored by the Solomon Islands. American Samoa remained scoreless, with the Solomon Islands dictating play to claim a 13-0 victory.
