FOUR men were among the 23 who graduated with a Bachelor of Midwifery at the Pacific Adventist University last Friday.

Of them, 21 were sponsored through the Pacific Scholarship programme under the Australian Awards.

PAU’s midwifery programme coordinator Martha Madagi said not many men took up course as culturally women did not want to see men attending to them.

She said it was very encouraging to see four males graduating this year.

Another four had enrolled this year and would graduate next year.

“We would like to see a lot of men taking up this course,” Madagi said.

She said there were not many midwives in the rural areas.

“But there are so many factors that contribute to that, but I’d like to see that a lot of midwives go back to rural areas.”

Midwifery was a course in the national curriculum that was fully sponsored and funded by the AusAID.
