ALOTAU’S netball precinct came alive through a mixed sevens tournament after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
Alotau Netball Association president Hacy Abel said the tournament organised was intended for fun while giving the chance for avid netballers to take the courts again.
“The turn-out (on Monday) was phenomenal as we didn’t expect much interest from residents around town,” she said.
“We started the day with six teams and ended up having nine.
“I am also grateful for the support of the male players who took time out to spend the day with us.”
Abel said the event was intended to be a one-day tournament but due to the interest from new teams, the tournament would continue and finish tomorrow.
K500 will be up for grabs where the best team, having won more games, will walk away with the prize money.
“Each team has seven players made up of four men and three women,” Abel said.
“We are appreciative that some of the male players are first-time netballers.”
The tournament resumes at 10am tomorrow and ends at 4pm with a presentation to mark the close of the event in Milne Bay.
