ENVIRONMENT and Conservation Minister Wera Mori says the joint venture partners for the Wafi-Golpu copper and gold project in Morobe will use the Deep-Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP) as its method for waste disposal.
He also announced the granting of an environment permit for the K18.4 billion project.
“At this time, when our economy is contracting, it is important that we must bring in a major project, to help kick-start reviving our economy,” he said.
“And there is no better project than Wafi-Golpu which on record is one of the biggest undeveloped copper and gold deposits in the world.”
Efforts were made yesterday get comments from Mining Minister Johnson Tuke, Mineral Resources Authority and the Lae chamber of commerce.
Last October, Prime Minister James Marape urged all stakeholders in the Wafi-Golpu Project to work together to move the project forward.
He said he had heard the call of landowners in the mine-impacted areas through their leaders.
He said he had also heard the concerns of Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu, to ensure all processes as per the laws of PNG were followed.

What a waste of time attending such consultations!
