Mine welcomes students

Education

SIXTEEN students from three universities joined various disciplines at the Ok Tedi mine through its graduate development scheme (GDS) programme last year.
They included 10 from the University of Technology, four from the University of Papua New Guinea and two from Divine Word University.
They were selected after meeting the GDS entry requirements.
The disciplines included accounting, human resource management, environmental science, chemistry, geology, mining engineering, mineral processing, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information and communications technology, and applied physics and instrumentation.
General manager social performance and sustainability, Jesse Pile, urged the graduates to grab this opportunity with open arms.
“We have a high calibre of technically-skilled people.
“Depending on what department you are attached with, you will be working with highly-specialised people.
“Embrace the opportunity by learning from them,” Pile said.
He said there is a professional career pathway within the company and noted that the miner’s current managing director and chief executive officer, Kedi Ilimbit, was a product of the graduate programme.
“It is a great programme to be a part of,” Pile said. Since 1988, OTML has trained 590 graduates under its GDS programme.
