Mine workers back to basics on safety

WORKERS at three Ramu NiCo Management sites in Madang have been told to seek details of every task they are given and avoid taking shortcuts which may lead to injury.
“Do not take shortcuts. Assess and reduce your own work risks and follow procedures when undertaking standard jobs,” said registered mine manager Bill Hill. “We need to question every task, no matter if it’s a task you have done hundred times before or many times the same way.
The workers are observing national mining safety week with the theme “fatal risk and critical control”.
“Identify some of the risks and take it back to your workplaces and ask yourselves: Are there fatal risks in my work area? What can I do to control them in my area of work, and what control measures do I have in place? Question every time what risks are involved, and what controls you have in place. That will make a difference.”
This year’s programme was run at the three sites of KBK mine, Basamuk refinery and the Madang operations base.
