POLICE in Tabubil, Western, were given a vehicle by the Asset Protection Department (APD) of Ok Tedi Mining Ltd (OTML) on Friday to boost their operations within the mining town and the mining villages.
North Fly police commander Chief Insp Silva Sika said the 10-seater Toyota Land Cruiser would be used by the mobile squad in order to attend to issues along the highway and in villages.
Sika said his officers would also address the dangerous practice of youths from the villages along the highway, jumping on the back of the big trucks that travel to the mine site or along the Kiunga to Tabubil highway.
He said the company did not want to be held responsible for death or injuries suffered by those who did this.
Sika said OTML had been assisting police in the province and this was one of the many contributions they had made to local law enforcement.
APD manager Peter Senat said he was aware of the logistical constraints that the police were experiencing to address law and order issues affecting the mining town.
