Minister kicks off Rosso Cup offseason grand final

LAE MP and Minister for Lands and Physical Planning John Rosso on Sunday kicked off the Buimo Road offseason Rosso Cup touch grand final.
He said more support would be given to the Lae Urban Local Level Government for youth sports.
JBL Bulls beat LK Roots 1-0 to claim the cup.
Rosso also served off the women’s volleyball grand final which was won by Lus Balens who beat KGS Sisters 5-2.
Rosso assured the community that he would continue to fund similar sporting events over the next two years provided participants, organisers and the community maintained the good behaviour and discipline shown in the games.
Competition president Philip Memba told The National that the competition had attracted 24 men’s the touch teams and 20 women’s volleyball teams.
He said the Rosso Cup begin in November last year and ended with the finals on Sunday.
Memba said Rosso had supported the offseason sports competition with K10,000.
The Bulls received K1,000 with a trophy and medals while runners-up Roots received K500 and a trophy.
For the women, Lus Balens received K500, a trophy and medals with Sisters got K250 plus a trophy and teams that made the finals all received consolation prizes.
“The whole community are happy and acknowledge the support given by Lae MP John Rosso in engaging young people in sports and would like to see more of such activities. It keeps young people away from illicit activities and everyone has taken ownership of the competition with games running smoothly throughout,” Memba said.
“This field has produced players like Justin Olam, Terry Wapi, Junior Rop and even current MP for Madang Bryan Kramer who played with us in the offseason rugby league competition.”
