MALE students playing in the recently-launched Lae Schoolboys Rugby League competition have been told to show good sportsmanship and take care of female players by patron and local MP John Rosso.
Rosso made the remarks when launching the competition at Lae Secondary School on Saturday. “It’s good to support you and my advice to encourage you is to play good clean, practice good sportsmanship and while you are playing on the field don’t involve in school fights,” he said
Rosso also encouraged the male students to take care of the female students participating in the competition.
He said girls had just as much to play rugby league for and needed to be respected and protected.
The Lands and Physical Planning Minister also gave K20,000 to support the competition but urged the students to be good representatives of their schools.
“If this thing doesn’t work out I might pull out the sponsorship, I always like fair play and if you want me to support Lae schools rugby league you have to behave.”
Lae Schoolboys Rugby League chairman Dennis Miall said he was thankful that the Lae District Development Authority of which Rosso is chairman and were right behind the school rugby league.
Rosso said he felt privileged to be part of the schools rugby league programme as he considered children very important.
“It’s very encouraging to see so many kids and schools involved in this programme. I like to thank the participating schools, the organisers especially Dennis Miall and the teachers, coaches and officials involved.”
