Minister for Housing and Urbanisation John Kaupa has vowed to provide land titles to settlers in his electorate.
He said this during a visit to 9-Mile’s Morobe block in Port Moresby on Friday.
The Moresby North-East MP was invited by the Morobe Community Development Association.
Kaupa’s visit was the first of its kind to Morobe Block after 15 years of waiting by them for basic government services like water, proper power lines.
Director of Urbanisation Max Kep said settlements needed to be recognised so that government services could flow through.
He said this was because 20 per cent of the country’s population lived in urban centres with a rapidly increasing population, of which more were working and living in settlements due to higher rental costs charged by real estate developers.
Kaupa said land security was vital for this generation and those to come.
“I will launch the pilot project of urbanisation community programme on July 25 with presentation of some successful land title certificates,” he told settlers.
