THE Enga Mioks have secured the services of former Hela Wigmen mentor Andiki Andrew as co-coach alongside Roger Laka who also plays at five-eighth for the Digicel Cup side.
The club said Andrew would assist the former SP Hunter for the remainder of the season.
“This follows Laka’s decision to take the field again to help the team who are lacking of two good halves,” the Mioks said in a statement last week.
Andrew, who turned heads when he took the Wigmen to the 2014 finals and won the grand final against the Rabaul Gurias, began his Mioks tenure last week.
Enga Mioks board chairman Philip Kepson commended Laka for steering the side following Joe Sipa’s exit as coach midway through last season.
He said Laka’s decision to play had been endorsed by the board.
“He has not been demoted nor replaced,” Kepson said.
“He is still part of the coaching staff.
“He wanted to play so we allowed him to do so because the team needed a good half to lead them.”
Andrew said he had accepted a request by the Mioks board to mentor the players and coaching staff.
“I am here to assist Laka and the team under a special arrangement,” he said.
“Laka is an intelligent young man who has got a bright future in this sport. I want to help such youngsters with whatever knowledge I have.”
Regarding his plan for the team, Andrew said he was known for rescuing teams that faced similar problems as the Mioks, who are in the bottom half of the Cup table.
He said he was prepared to do his best in helping the Mioks end the season on a positive note.
Laka said he was happy with Andrew’s arrival, adding he would work closely with him to learn as much as he could. “
