MISS Pacific Islands Josie Nicholas says her win is not only for her, but also for the region.
She arrived back in the country after her crowning in Samoa two weeks ago, saying she will continue her education advocacy by engaging with young people and changing their attitude.
Her father Jerry Nicholas said raising up Josie was a challenge financially but with the support of his wife, they managed to make her what she is today.
“I’m satisfied that she has achieved her dream and continuing with her journey.
“She has a long way to go we will continue to support her,” he said.
Josie, 24, has donated books to schools in her province.
People of Central’s Kairuku and Rigo welcomed her when she arrived at the Jackson International Airport last Friday.
Miss Pacific Island Pageant (MPIP) chairman Molly O’Rourke said Josie would attend three tourism events in New Zealand’s Wellington and the United States’ Florida.
“She will promote tourism and the diverse culture we share as Pacific people,” she said.
O’Rourke said Josie had a huge role to serve as a cultural ambassador for Papua New Guinea and the Pacific.
Biotou Primary School students, to whom she donated books and K1,000 to support their education, were also at the airport to welcome her.
Head teacher Gregory Koaba said they appreciated her support for the students who were encouraged to read the books.
