THE body a police officer who went missing at the Gulf River mouth last Wednesday was found near Baimuru village, says provincial police commander Silva Sika.
Sika told The National that Senior Constable Jeffery Jack, who was in his 40s, went missing at the mouth of Vailala River in the Ihu district after the boat he was travelling on encountered rough seas. He fell over board.
“The body was in the water for more than 48 hours, it was spotted on the sand (washed ashore by the waves) by locals at Baimuru village,” he said.
Sika said the body was found around 5pm on Thursday and was transported to Kerema at around 9pm by the police rescue team.
They then brought the body from Kerema around 3pm on Friday into Port Moresby to be put at the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue to await repatriation preparation to his village at Silo in Central Kerema for burial.
“Jack has been the only regular police officer at the Ihu Rural Police Station for more than 10 years now with community-based police officers who were working under him,” Sika said.
He said he got on the boat at Ihu with about 15 passengers to travel to Kerema police headquarters to do some official duties when the incident happened. There were strong winds and rough seas.
