Mobil Oil’s new storage tank that opened in Port Moresby yesterday has the capacity to hold 5.6 million litres of diesel.
This allows more fuel to be stored in the country.
General manager Patrick Tang said that was enough to fill 93,000 cars and brought the total number of fuel tanks at the Idubada terminal to five.
“The new storage tank provides an exciting opportunity for Mobil Oil to serve the growing fuel demand across the country,” he said.
Tang said the additional tank allowed operational flexibility and facilitated safe delivery of fuel from the terminal to customers.
He said it took nine months for the construction of the new tank at a cost of about K30 million.
“It will supply mainly Port Moresby,” Tang said.
“We do have other terminals in Lae and Madang and distribution terminals in Alotau, Kimbe, Kavieng and Rabaul.
“This is the biggest tank and it’s one of the 10 tanks that we have in the country.”
ExxonMobil PNG managing director Andrew Barry said the new storage tank was a great extension of their facility and it demonstrated ExxonMobil’s ongoing commitment to new investment in the fuel market in the country.
ExxonMobil Asia-Pacific executive director for fuels Bruce Sutherland said Mobil Oil was proud to utilise its extensive supply chains across the region to make sure they could support uninterrupted supply of fuel to the market.
“Mobil is excited about the growth opportunities here in Papua New Guinea,” he said.
“We’ll continue to fund the ongoing investments that are required to meet PNG’s growing fuel demand.
“We are committed to doing that reliably and making sure that we’ve got a succinct supply of refined fuel into the country.”
