DOCTORS and nurses at Modilon Hospital in Madang have reached out to help more than 500 villagers left homeless in a tribal fight at Karkar Island in 2013.
Villagers from Boroman had their homes burnt when a councillor from another village was killed.
Akoi Langain, from Boroman village, said 47 houses were burnt and more than 500 people were left homeless.
Garu Sungai said her six-bedroom house went up in flames as she stood helplessly and watched.
“Today we are still struggling to rebuild our houses and recoup properties that we lost,” she said.
The villagers negotiated with Modilon Hospital staff and arranged a bilum exchange programme which was held in Madang yesterday.
Boroman women, under the Lutheran church’s Haus Paia Women’s Group, weaved colourful Karkar bilums. Spokeswoman Mill Bagel said nurses, doctors and ancillary staff were given four bilums each.
In return, they were given bags filled with cooking utensils, clothes and bedding.
