THE ordination of a new priest for the Kumin parish in Mendi, Southern Highlands, was a cause for celebration for hundreds of people on Saturday.
Deacon Peter Mondo from Chimbu was ordained as a priest at a special mass. His family joined the people of Southern Highlanders and Hela in the one-week celebrations.
On Friday, they dressed in their traditional regalia and danced.
They thanked the Chimbu people for giving one of their sons to be a priest. Southern Highlands Bishop Donald Lippert blessed him before other priests joined in and laid their hands on him.
Lippert said the ordination of a priest was a thrilling occasion for the diocese because priests made Christ present and the sacrament more accessible. He said the ordination showed Christians that the Holy Spirit was working in the hearts and minds of the people of the diocese.
The 50th Golden Jubilee celebration ended on Sunday with the closing Divine Mercy and Jubilee Mass.
