PAPUA New Guinea Football Association has retained the services of Warren Moon as head coach of the PNG Kapuls in preparation for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers later this year.
Moon was engaged last year to oversee the Kapuls at the Pacific Games and PNGFA extended his contract for a year as he gets preparation underway for the senior men’s team.
PNG Football Association president John Kapi Natto said the first step would be preparing the team for the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) men’s nations cup set for Vanuatu in June.
“We have extended Warren Moon’s contract for a year after his initial engagement with the team last year for the Pacific Games,” Natto said.
“Warren will prepare the men’s national team for the World Cup qualifier starting with the tournament in June (OFC men’s nation cup).
“The tournament in Vanuatu is important for us.”
Natto said Moon had his programme lined up for the team leading into Vanuatu.
“We’re excited that he’s (Moon) come back, he visited Lae (last week) and he’s back here (in Port Moresby),” said Natto.
“It’s (nations cup) a very important tournament for us because it will seed us (through) the ranking seed then Fifa will do the pool for (the world cup qualifier) that will be played later this year from September to November.”
PNGFA will host a pool game for the World Cup qualifier in November in Port Moresby.
“We’re very excited about that (hosting the qualifiers),” Natto said.
“We also have other plans that Warren is working with us with his influence and his contacts.”
Meanwhile, Moon extended his gratitude to PNGFA for retaining his services.
Moon said he reviewed how he could help develop the level of football in PNG after the Pacific Games, with his recommendations submitted to PNGFA.
He is expected to assemble a squad for the Kapuls and kickoff preparations.
