MORE than 100 employees of St Barbara’s Simberi gold mine in New Ireland have joined miners in getting the Covid-19 vaccination jabs to stop the pandemic from spreading.
Some rolled up their sleeves for their first shots while some were into their second.
They included contractors and expatriates, mostly Australians, working at the mine in Tabar Islands, New Ireland. Human resources superintendent Nobert Sale said: “Like many Papua New Guineans, I have read a lot of social media comments against the Covid-19 vaccines, but I chose to take it because I have a duty of care to my workmates and my family.
“Additionally, I am scared of what the more severe Delta strain could do to us in PNG.”
The mine has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, as other mines.
But it remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of its workers and the people through its site protocols and health measures.
