MORE than 400 teachers in Hela are doing further studies to upskill themselves at the University of Goroka, according to an official.
Education director Ronny Angu said a big number of teachers were attending the university which was an indication on a way forward in polishing quality learning and teaching standards.
“This year, we are beginning another training programme with the Dauli College of Higher Education with 114 students,” he said.
Angu said they would be trained for Diploma in Early Childhood, Diploma in Education Leadership and Bachelor in Education.
“All these teachers are studying through Christmas Lahara courses,” he said.
Higher Education Minister Don Polye said in Parliament recently that digital learning would be introduced in the university to allow students outside campus to study online.
Polye said the university would also focus on teachers’ training programmes.
He said other courses could be offered at other universities.
“That way, we’ll see everyone working to complement or supplement one and other to achieve the quality of the programme delivered,” Polye said.
He added that they were keen to see improvement in the next few years.
“I have strong conviction that we will have improved the quality, increased the staff teachers that will go out to the secondary schools to teach them and we will find relevance in the programme that we are administrating through the institutions,” Polye said.
