THE newly-established Port Moresby North West Rugby League has launched its 2024 season with 26 teams ready to compete.
League president Billy Aki said during the launch yesterday that Port Moresby had seen a rapid increase in population and the number of talents in the city was growing.
Aki said the oldest local competition in the country, the Port Moresby RFL, could not accommodate all the talents in its competition.
He said the league’s establishment would capture talents in the district.
The rise of Moresby South League over the last five years has moved Aki to set up the competition.
“We see Port Moresby Rugby League and Moresby South League as the benchmark local leagues in the city and in the country and that’s the standard we want to get to,” Aki said.
“This year is just our inaugural season so it would be a good test for us.
“In the past, we operated as POM Suburban League and it wasn’t really up to that standard.
“But with the rise of Moresby South League, which was only established in recent years, we feel that POMNW deserve a well-established league that is affiliated to PNGRFL.
“There is a very big pool of talent in the city and they have been missing out because two leagues (POMRFL and MSRL) alone cannot fit all of them. POMNW league can now cater for its players in its district.”
