Moresby soccer association shortens season

THE Port Moresby Soccer Association will hold just one round of matches before the competition heads into the finals next month, according to an official.
Association match coordinator Peter Mathew told The National that the decision was due to limited time.
“We’ll be having only one round of matches this season because of the ongoing impact of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) on sports,” he said. “With our schedule, it’s a shorter period for the season, so our executives have agreed for just one round and not two.
“We have about five to six weeks of football left and that should see us go all the way up to the second week of October before we head into our finals.”
Mathew said a decision on the finals format would be made soon with the competition heading into the business end of the season.
Meanwhile, he pointed out that there was a bigger turnout by teams and fans this year with the season now progressing into week nine of competition.
“It’s big improvement in the turnout of teams and spectators,” Mathew said.
“There are some new faces and they’re bringing in their supporters, so that’s a good sign of how things are progressing on the ground.
“In the previous months, it was due to Covid-19 restrictions on our competition and the fact that there wasn’t much football played last year. So we’re hoping to see the rest of the regular season end on a high note.”
