THE second edition of the annual Moresby South Motu-Koitabu netball tournament on Monday paid tribute to one of its founding participants who was killed earlier this year with organisers naming a trophy in her honour.
The junior tournament trophy was launched in memory of 18-year-old Komi Geita-Gaudi, who was killed in her home at Mahuru village, Korobosea, by a fallen tree caused by torrential rain and strong winds in February.
Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko said Geita-Gaudi’s commitment to the sport and her community was an example to women in Moresby South.
“To Komi’s parents, I want to say thank you to your daughter, she was a wonderful bright spark who was very energetic who lost her life tragically to a natural disaster that no-one would ever think would happen,” he said.
“She was part of the inaugural Motu-Koitabu and Moresby South tournament, so her passing was a shock to everybody.
“The winner’s trophy is named in her honour and will remain for young women who aspire to be just like her.”
“That’s something very special for this tournament which we will keep in our hearts.”
