Morgue expansion vital: Toka

NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) Acting Governor Dadi Toka Jr says the Port Moresby General Hospital mortuary is being proposed to be expanded.
“This follows the lack of space to store bodies,” he said.
“We have received valid recommendations on the issue which we will need to look into.”
Toka, a former member of the hospital board, said though the NCD Commission was not part of the management of the hospital or mortuary, “we only work in partnership”.
“At the moment, NCDC has yet to come up with its board but we are looking at all the options to expand the mortuary and manage it,” he said. “We had discussions of privatising the mortuary but the cost of funerals, especially from a motukoita village perspective, is very high.”
Meanwhile, hospital medical services director Dr Kone Sobi said more than 100 bodies, stored from Aug 1 to Dec 15, would be given a mass burial in two weeks’.
