Minister for Commerce and Industry Wera Mori says Yu Yet PNG is a duly-registered company which has met all statutory requirements to operate in the country.
Mori, in response to questions raised in Parliament, by Madang MP Bryan Kramer about the company said the company was registered under Investment Promotion Authority (IPA).
“Despite the negativity being portrayed by the public, we must look at the successes of Yu Yet PNG,” he said.
“It has kept a lot of young people off the streets.
“It is giving hope to those who think that they have no future, especially our young people who have migrated into the city and have participated in this programme. We, as citizens of this country, are affected by lifestyle diseases and the programme addresses some of those issues pertaining to personal health and hygiene.”
The issue of the controversy over K3 million kina paid to alleged foreign company, Yu Yet PNG Ltd was debated on the floor of Parliament last week.
The question was directed to Mori, who said the programmes were very successful as seen in the number of people who participated.
“I want to make it clear: I’m not here in defence of Governor of National Capital District (Powes Parkop),” he said.
“People must also see the good things he is doing and also Moresby South MP (Justin Tkatchenko) in transforming our city.
“For the first time, people can see a lot of changes and it’s attributed to the leadership.
“I like to dismiss the claims that Yumi Yet was operating illegally.
“Yes, it is a foreign entity owned by one shareholder but it has been fully registered and it has met all requirements by IPA to operate
“It has provided services to the city of Port Moresby and it will continue to do so.”
