WAU-Waria electorate in Morobe yesterday established their district election steering committee consisting of members from stakeholders in the district says an official.
Returning officer Fidelis Harissol said the committee members were made up of the three assistant returning officers, police, church, business rep and a youth or community rep.
“We are including these stakeholders in the election steering committee for the district because we want our stakeholders to own this election and make the public know that election is everyone’s business,” he said.
Harissol also mentioned that the step taken to involve these stakeholders is for a smooth running of the election processes in the district and that it is transparent all throughout.
He further stated that yesterday, officials from the district election office proceeded to clear up the ballot boxes used in 2017 election.
“The old ballot papers were burnt witnessed by police and other stakeholders,” he said.
“This is to clear up the boxes and get them ready for the coming polling”.
Meanwhile, Harissol said Wau- Waria has experienced a very peaceful nomination and campaigning by candidates and their supporters during the last week has gone peacefully. “Despite reports of a death during campaign last Thursday, generally, it is peaceful as candidates and supporters do their businesses peacefully,” he said.
As a newly established electorate in the province, standards had to be set in the first place in doing right things at the right time so that these can set precedence into the future.
The returning officer while highlighting some actions that are not right during the campaign period said candidates and their supporters must not campaign late into the night and disturb the public, no overloading and alcohol during this time.
Police presence in the electorate has beefed up and whoever found to breach any election rules and regulations will be held accountable.
