ABOUT 5,000 tourists are expected to visit Morobe early next year, Eco-Tourism Consultancy Service director Francis Steven says.
“They are also expected to spend about K10 million,” he said.
“This is a historic moment for Morobe because the eco-tourism master cultural calendar 2023 will create seasonal employment for 200 workers and more than 1,000 participants as product owners will take the lead as tourist guides and security,” he added.
Steven said about K274,000 was needed to launch the tourism programme.
He said a call for support had also been extended by Huon Gulf, Markham, Bulolo and Nawaeb as well as the Lae City Authority in their consultations on the programme.
“At the moment, Salamaua in the Huon Gulf is the first to financially show support to bring in the international tourists.
“Research, survey and logistics as well as planning to cater for the tourists have been carried out between 2018 and 2022 along with training and awareness,” Steven said.
The first cruise ship is scheduled to visit Lae on Feb 24.
