Morobe opens second CHW school

MOROBE will now have another community health worker (CHW) training school operated by the Assembly of God (AOG) Church in Lae’s Okari campus.
Principal Jason Jambui said the school would produce frontline health workers to serve as a bridge between the communities, health care systems and the State’s Health Departments.
“The focus of the CHWs will be to address issues in terms of medical services,” he said.
“Health centres have always had the issue of limited number of CHWs serving patients daily.
“For example, the Buimo Health centre serves about 30,000 patients yearly and they have only six CHWs which include five nursing officers and an aid post orderly who visits two times a week.
“And in order to serve these 30,000 patients in a year, the five nurses or CHWs would have to be attending to 2,000 patients daily.”
Jambui said about 40 students had enrolled for the two-year certificate programme.
“These students would be graduating with a school-issued certificate and they would get their medical licence from the medical board,” he said.
“The board will also guarantee positions for the graduates around the country.”
