MOROBE provincial government (MPG) has paid K500,000 to support the Electoral Commission (EC) conduct the local level government (LLG) elections.

A memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed between MPG and EC to create an understanding between the two agencies to assist each other in unexpected situations.

The MoA was signed by EC Deputy Commissioner election administrations Steven Yakali and Morobe Deputy Governor Morokoi Gaiwata.

Yakali also paid K600,000 in outstanding allowances to election returning officers engaged in last year’s general elections.

Gaiwata said that MPG was mindful about third-tier government which was crucial but the national Government fell short of K30 million from the required EC budget submission of K80 to conduct the elections.

Morobe has 33 LLGs and 1200 officials engaged to conduct the election.

Yakali said more than 6,000 LLGs and 3,000 presidential writs would be issued and distributed today. That was much more than the general election.

He said that most provinces signed a MoA with EC to assist in funding LLG elections but had yet to pay their part and Morobe had taken the lead.
