SUBSTITUTE Nalau Peter netted a double to help Morobe United crush National Soccer League rookies Sepik 5-0 in round two of the Northern Conference at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium on Saturday.
Sepik, however, were valiant as captain Henry Salle, Nathan Loi, Bisa Kalam and Kevin Mami visited United’s goalmouth on several occasions.
They applied pressure to United defenders Junior Sigit, Joel Gedisa Belden Yapu and Henry Ronny, but the hosts’ back four were equal to the task.
Loi and Kalam had several attempts on goal, but they were unable to score find the back of the net as United kept the opposition attackers at bay for the entire match.
Captain Max Efale and fellow midfielder Boas Isom, on the other hand, gained the ascendency for United when the pair found Ronny who beat Sepik goalkeeper Ishmael Maddang for the opener 21 minutes in.
Sepik regrouped in defence and prevented United from scoring any more goals in the first half.
But coach Daino Sami’s United moved up another gear after the break to score four unanswered second-half goals.
Russel Nirik and Vicent Tai were among the goal scorers as United bagged their first win of the season.
In the first game of Lae’s Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium triple-header, Morobe Wawens rebounded from their season-opening Lae City loss to beat the visiting Tusbab Stallions 3-1.
The other match saw reigning champions Lae City beat rivals Lae City Dwellers 4-1 to continue their perfect start to the season.
