TERTIARY students in Morobe province attending 17 institutions around the country have welcomed a K5 million funding from the provincial government through its Gerson-Solulu scholarship this year.
Spokesman Offo Olio of the Martin Luther seminary, on behalf of 670 continuing students and more than 300 first year students, thanked the provincial government for honouring its promise to make the scholarship a long-term fixture in the budget.
The students gathered yesterday at the Morobe provincial administration headquarters and were briefed by the Morobe students’ union leaders, comprising executives from different associations in the 17 institutions.
The students were told that K1m have been deposited into the institutions’ bank accounts as part of the first quarter payments.
Part of the agenda discussed was the appeal to parents and students to appreciate this assistance and reciprocate by actively taking part in academic and extra-curricular activities.
Olio said each student was required to pay K100 union fee from which K50 would be deposited into the 17 students’ associations
The Morobe students union praised the initiative of Governor Luther Wenge.
The provincial administration is seriously considering having the Gerson-Sololu scholarship to cover the best degree students pursuing their master’s degree.
