Morobe water police need help

NORTHERN commander Assist Comm of Police (ACP) Peter Guinness says Morobe’s water police were facing manpower and equipment constraints in law enforcement in the province. “There are only four policemen available for duty daily,” he said.  “The two police boats (MV Geosi Labi and Baki 1) that were sent to Port Moresby for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in 2018 were held back refurbishment and engine replacement. “Both boats are still at Motukea. “Refurbishment work on Baki has been completed and refitted with new engines and is ready to return to Lae.” ACP Guinness said a new skipper and crew were recrutied. “Another problem now is anchor space for the two boats,” he said.  “It is very expensive to get these boats to anchor at the Lae Yacht Club.” ACP Guinness said all boats anchored at the club were insured and “that means we have to get the boats insured before they can be anchored at the club”. Recently, Lae water police were given a 75-horse-powered engine and Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour gave a 2ft banana boat.
That is now with Morobe Patrol Post police. “The cost of servicing boats, fixing, getting it on the water and anchor is very expensive and we are mindful of that,” he said.
