MOROBE Wawens are using the indefinite suspension of the National Soccer League to advocate on Coronavirus-safe practices in schools around Lae, according to coach Percy Mataio.
The club visited Tent City Primary School on Wednesday to create awareness and urge students to follow the Niupela Pasin measures.
Mataio said apart from the awareness, they also held mini soccer games to help students understand that the sport could be used as a tool for change in communities.
“Amid the measures issued by the National Control Centre and Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation, Wawens are using this time to connect with people in communities and schools around Lae,” he said.
“We are advocating on safe practices and proper hygiene among children.
“Spreading the message among students is important, given that classrooms can be crowded and are prone to unsafe practices.
“Therefore, we’re helping children to understand the importance of wearing masks, washing their hands and using sanitisers to help reduce the spread of the virus.
“The mini soccer games helped the students understand that it was bad to practise habits like being involved in school fights and taking drugs.”
Mataio said they were also using this time to conduct awareness on school fights.
“We want to give back to our communities by teaching children to do the right thing,” he said.
