A WOMEN’S group in Morobe received an early Christmas gift yesterday – 20 new sewing machines from the Morobe government.
Members of the Balakaka Women’s Group from the Yabim-Mape local level government area in Finschhafen received the sewing machines from Governor Kelly Naru.
The cost of K14,000 was allocated from the provincial services improvement programme fund.
Naru said the group had requested him to buy the machines when he attended the Lutheran Church Synod in Finschhafen early this year.
“We thought we can support them to improve their lives and generate income for their families,” he said.
Naru said working in partnership with and engaging Morobeans to go into small-to-medium enterprises projects was a key priority.
He said they were trying to ensure cooperative societies were created in the rural areas to partner with the government to drive development.
The group’s spokeswoman Alma Oboko said they would use the machines to sew meri blouses and sell them to generate income to support their families.
“We really appreciate what our government is doing for us. We will do a lot of things with these sewing machines,” Oboko said.
Naru gave K1000 for their trip back to Finschhafen with their gifts.
