THE D8 Mosquitoes will meet the winners of Kone Falcons – Makana United semifinal in the 2017 Governor’s Cup grand final today after beating the Talai Spartans 12-0 in their plate division preliminary final yesterday.
The fixture between the Falcons and United was brought forward to today because the match was unable to be completed at the Kone Tigers Oval yesterday.
That semifinal fixture takes place this morning with the winner then playing the final in afternoon.
The match between the Mosquitoes and Spartans saw the men from the 8-Mile suburb in Port Moresby hold out a rugged Spartans outfit.
Mosquitoes captain Lamech John credited his men for their composure and self-belief particularly on defence.
“It was a good effort by us and we have made the final so we’ll wait and see who we face,” John said.
The Mosquitoes were first to put points on the board with a try to winger Nathan Solo in the 13th minute which five-eighth Charlie Jessie converted from out wide.
Mosquitoes centre Paul Naka grabbed his side’s second four-pointer on the stroke of fulltime to close out a solid team effort and earn his side a spot in the plate final.
In the bowl semifinal, Urunamini Raiders defeated the Raiders Namona 14-4 and stand by to face the winner of ATS DC3 – Saraga Survivors semi.
In the Cup finals playoff, the Mountain Bulls are standing by to take on the winner of the Freeway Bumpers and 9-Mile Giants match after defeating the City Redbacks 10-6 in the cup division preliminary final on Sunday.
The Bumpers and Giants games was called off yesterday after the scores were locked at 10-10 after extra time and golden point extra time. They play today to decide who face sthe Bulls in the cup final.
