MOST of the fights reported in Madang are caused by drunkards, Madang police commander Acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang says.
“Police were able to contain the situation with the drunkards being cautioned and sent home,” he said.
“Cheap alcohol is contributing to the social problem.”
Supt Rubiang said he had been lamenting on the sale and consumption of cheap alcohol that the Asians and the people who own liquor shops in the province were selling.
“The authorities need to urgently address the issue of cheap sales of liquor,” he said.
Supt Rubiang said fights were reported in LBC between the Wagol settlers.
“Another fight was in BMR settlement and some outside of town.”
He said police were on full alert for the New Year rervellers and responded swiftly to stop the fights with no serious incidents reported.
Community leader David Kurame said “this festive season was one of the best ever, relatively peaceful with no serious violence being reported”.
“The people really enjoyed their celebrations in their respective communities but only a few drunkards caused some noise, but they were chased away by policemen,” he said.
