THE number of students enrolling in Flexible Open and Distance Education (Fode) centre is expected to increase to more than 50,000 because of its fee-free status, an official says.
Principal of National Fode office Anthony Rayappan told The National that Fode centres around the country had noticed a bigger number of students enrolling since Monday.
The centres do not have any limits to intakes.
“We had 35,000 students enrolling last year around the country,” he said.
“This year it will go up to between 50,000 and 55,000.
“That’s because of the new fee-free education policy.
“We started enrolment on Monday and have seen a huge response from parents and students.”
Rayappan said Grade 10 students who failed to make it into secondary schools but had passed their subjects would be accepted.
Centres in Morobe, Western Highlands, East New Britain, Eastern Highlands and Port Moresby have seen a spike in the enrolment of Grade 11 students.
“We have extended the cut-off date for enrolment to the end of February,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Fode centre is printing resource materials for students.
Rayappan said they are using some of the funds from last year to print the materials.

  • What about students who are Under TESAS but are paying full tuition fees. Colleges like Pom Business Colleges? Is this college different from other boarding colleges who’s students are also either TESAS or HECAS? Can the Education Secretary look into this as week. Concerned Parent

  • A bulk of our high school students are facing this “drop out” issue and are not progressing towards the next grade or to tertiary institutions. FODE is doing a great job of enrolling our students.

However, the government needs to do much-needed research to provide a more holistic approach to resolving this issue.

Papua New Guineans have a lot of potential, our people deserve much more than what they’re getting.

  • It is so good, but what about those brainy ones who passed their exams. They committed themselves. Also they are the children of this Nation and should deserve a free education totally.
