A 26-YEAR-OLD mother of two was arrested in East Sepik for allegedly killing her two-week-old baby boy in Murik Basis’ Stone Point in Wewak on Tuesday morning.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said according to witnesses, the mother, from Murik Basis, committed infanticide by killing and burying her baby just outside Wewak town.
“Witnesses reported that the mother buried her baby near the beach and left,” he said.
“The body of the baby was found floating nearby on Thursday morning.”
Beli said relatives took the body to Boram Hospital and later lodged a police report.
“Initial reports from the hospital showed that the baby’s neck was twisted and broken.”
Beli said police investigations led to the arrest of the mother.
He said she was expected to be charged with committing infanticide in court today.
“I am appealing to mothers to take pride of their own flesh and blood and to care and raise them safely with tender care,” he said.
“It is not right to resort to abortions or take the life of new born,” Beli added.
