GOROKA MP Aiye Tambua has allocated K1 million as the women small-medium enterprises (SMEs) funding.
He paid women groups in the Pisswara Settlement and Minogere police barracks K10,000 each.
He said the Goroka district SME funds would not be kept in banks because their stringent procurement measures would discouraged the women groups.
“Therefore, Goroka is delivering in person to women groups what they deserve so they can start up businesses of their choice,” Tambua said.
“If you want a poultry project or sell ice block or whatever, this support is your seed capital.
“Grow it and depending on how much you raise or save, the district development authority will give you 100 per cent of what you have raised from this initial capital.”
He said there were more than 6,000 applications but they should be registered as associations to qualify for assistance.
The groups that received funding at Minogere barracks were; Wakanda women’s group; Oil Palm women’s group; and, Jamika women’s group.
Tambua called on youths in Goroka to find places in colleges and technical vocational schools so he would assist with fees.
“I want you to secure spaces and get technically skilled so you can find self-employment or even find your own employment opportunities to live sustainably,” he said.

  • If only this type of assistance are repayable, interest free and well documented by the DDA, this will enable the SME’S to operate in a diligent manner in meeting their targets and fulfilling their objectives.
Although the intention is to empower the people for financial inclusion in the economic sector beginning on a smaller scale, the manner in which funds are channeled could potentially be seen as another mere cash hand out by a politician without proper control.
