TEWAI-Siassi MP Dr Kobby Bomareo has lashed out at members of the Morobe Tutumang (assembly) for calling a meeting and passing its 2021 budget when the country was in mourning yesterday.
Bomareo said the Tutumang session was held at an odd time and it only showed the leaders’ incompetency.
“We are the elder of Mamose and we are leading it wrong,” Bomareo told Tutumang members.
“This is a good budget but it should have been passed last September.
“What we are doing now is not respecting the Grand Chief when the country is in mourning.”
Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge shared the sentiments, saying members were disrespectful to the “father of the nation” when hosting the budget session.
He said the budget was good with little things not in order and it prompted him and Bomareo to talk to them.
Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu explained to the session that they had marked March 2, as the date of the province’s budget to be passed but that didn’t mean they had no respect for Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
“For the students under Gerson-Solulu scholarship, they were affected because their fees were not paid,” he said.
“We’ve talked to the schools to allow them classes and we have to pass the budget to pay for their fees.
“Also, we have to pass the budget because from there, the administration can find some money for us to participate in the haus krai and pay our respects.
“We now passed the budget and we can now participate in the haus krai.”
