MP: Border post must be developed

SOUTH Bougainville MP Timothy Masiu says the Kangu border post must be fully developed because it will become a major trade port and the gateway to the Melanesian Spearhead Group.
“It is also strategically located close to the Asian trade route,” he said.
Masiu, who is also Information Communications and Technology Minister, has also thrown his support for the joint border consultation team that is currently touring South Bougainville for preliminary and identification meetings with community government chairmen, village chiefs and elders.
“The team is going down to the community level to consult and involve community leaders who are connected with the border,” Masiu said.
“The meeting is timely in light of Bougainville’s move for Independence.”
He said he supported the introduction of the TBC (traditional border crossers) card system to screen and control movements.
“I am certain that the team had toured Kangu port and seen its potential to generate much needed revenue to support Bougainville’s Independence,” he said.
“Apart from goods brought in and out by TBCs, many commercial goods were being brought.”
