THE Catholic Church-run health centre on Yule Island in Central has been given a dinghy to use as a sea ambulance.
Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo said when handing over the dinghy last week that health services in the district remained a problem with health facilities badly needing upgrading.
The St Patrick’s Health Centre in Kairuku sub-district was established in 1887 and is one of the oldest in the country.
It received the dinghy and the 40-horse power outboard engine to transport patients from the coastal villages of Poukama, Nikura and Delena villages to the health centre.
It will also be used to run rural mobile clinic programmes along these coastal villages.
Isoaimo also bought a dinghy and outboard engine for Inika village on the coast of Yule Island. He said the dinghies and engines were brought from funds allocated under his health programme.
He also made commitment of K20,000 to the churches and the Inika Primary School during the presentation.
