ALOTAU MP Charles Abel says the introduction of Boeing 737 flights to Gurney Airport in Milne Bay should encourage more domestic tourist in the country.
Abel said this in Alotau on Friday during the inaugural flight to Gurney.
“We are a tourism province and we continue to aspire to having our tourist ships visiting us and having our international and domestic tourist visiting Milne Bay,” he said.
“This inaugural flight represents another step in our journey to be the leading tourism destination.
“We say to all people of Papua New Guinea, there are many beautiful destinations around the country and if you cannot travel overseas at this time, please visit Milne Bay.
“We have many resorts, WWII historical sites with some of the best diving spots in the world and beautiful culture.
“We like to think that we are also a peaceful province.
“We are appealing to those who cannot travel overseas due to the Covid-19 to please do come to the beautiful Milne Bay.”
Air Niugini chief executive officer Bruce Alabaster said domestic tourism was the way forward to develop the tourism industry.
“One of the benefits of having the international borders effective closed is that it gives all of us much more opportunities to discover Papua New Guinea domestically, soon we will be rolling out getaway fares, specifically aimed at getting tourists domestic travel, that is on top of our great Tuesday fare,” he said.
