NEW Ireland maimais (traditional village chiefs) added their traditional touch to the haus krai of late the Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc in Lae on Friday.
The maimais, who were brought there by Kavieng MP and People’s Progress Party (PPP) leader Ben Micah, gave gifts of food and pigs to the Zurenuoc family, as well as performed a traditional reconciliation ceremony with Speaker and Finschhafen MP Theodore Zurenuoc for leaving PPP for Pangu in 2014.
Micah said whatever may have transpired, the Zurenuoc family had always had close links with PPP, and he had an obligation to help on behalf of the party.
“You may not ask me for help when you are in need but I will always be there,” he told Theodore.
“You may build a new house or a new village, but, we have the same roots.
“When you are in a problem, such as now, I will come.”
The speaker, on behalf of the Zurenuoc family, thanked the New Ireland maimais, Micah and the PPP for their contribution.
“It is good to see that our Papua New Guinea customs of helping are still alive,” he said.
“What you have done is unique from others who have come to us at this haus krai.
“Ben Micah is familiar with the Zurenuoc family and with Morobe.
“We will not forget what you have done for us.”
Zurenuoc also said that his family continued to have close ties with PPP. It is not easy to take PPP out of our blood,” he said.
“Aside from politics, we continue to maintain a good friendship, in both good and bad times.”
Zurenuoc said his cousin Sir Manasupe had touched the lives of many people and this was evident by the number of people who came to pay their respect at the haus krai.
