LOCALS in Jiwaka can now borrow up to K1000 with the Bank South Pacific and National Development Bank to do business.

Anglimp South Waghi MP Joe Koim told more than 500 people in Jiwaka last Friday that he had set up a credit scheme after depositing K1 million into the two financial institutions.

“My people can now borrow from the banks (BSP and NDB) and start generating an income to sustain their livelihood in the villages.

“While I become the custodian of my people’s money, I will not entertain free handouts. Simply because such mentality makes people become lazy and unproductive,” he said.

“With the micro credit scheme you don’t engage in it for a short while but you do it for the benefit of future generations as well.”

Koim, a businessman before entering politics in 2012, said it takes someone to start small but with a lot of sacrifices and time to reach your desired goals.

“I’m linking you with the two banks so you must prove your capability to me and the banks that you can be able to manage a business,” he added.
