NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has urged MPs to recognise “that we represent all people, including women”.
Parkop called on them for leadership and action to end gender-based violence.
“It starts with us, the members of parliament,” he said.
“We are obliged legally, morally, politically and ethically to provide leadership on issues that affect the quality of life and status of women in our country.
“Gender-based violence is a major impediment to the quality of life and status of women.
“It drives fear into them and limits their growth and potential.
“Every day, they have to face fear, harassment, threats and many times, violence including at home.
“Even going to the bus stop and getting on public transport is a stressful and at times traumatic experience for women and girls.”
Parkop said there was a plan to deal with gender-based violence which was approved by Cabinet and started in 2016.
“This plan was designed by stakeholders especially women in PNG and the United Nations,” he said.
“The plan needs to be funded and implemented without delay.
“It also needs to be updated so that it addresses the behaviour and attitude of men in our country.”

  • Violence against women can be traced to alcohol and sexual immorality in most cases. Replace these two evils with GOD and we have a pretty good chance of reducing this menace.

  • How will MPs, as human beings, end violence against women? Who drives people to do all those evil deeds? Every human on Earth is either driven by God or driven by the devil. What people do, their character, their attitude, etc should tell us when who drives them to do what they do. The devil uses people as it’s vessels only if we allow him to use us. When we allow God to use us, the devil will not use us. Thus, make ourselves useful for God’s work and shut the devil out.
