Mungkas, Wantoks qualify

Mungkas men’s team and Wantoks women’s side have qualified to represent Southern at the National Club Championships in September.
Both clubs secured their spots after coming out on top at the Southern Regional Club Championships which was hosted by the National Capital District Public Servant Soccer Association (NCDPSSA) in Port Moresby over the weekend.
Papua New Guinea Football Association president John Kapi Natto, pictured, was present to hand the trophies to the teams yesterday.
The two-day regional championships saw 10 clubs from three associations compete in round-robin matches at the Pacific Institute of leadership and Governance Oval which ended yesterday.
Mungkas, who are the defending champions of the Port Moresby Football Association, finished first while Wantoks and Chief Pepealo finished second and third respectivelyt.
Wantoks were the form women’s side from NCDPSSA.
Kapi Nato commended the associations and their top teams for participating in the regional championships as it was revived by PNGFA.
“The game that you have played at club level has showed consistency from the associations that you come from,” Kapi Natto told the teams.
Kapi Nato acknowledged teams from Port Moresby and outside, for their efforts in developing football at the club level.
Koupa are the only association from outside Port Moresby to have competed at the regional championships.
“There is a good balance of teams from the city and outside,” Kapi Natto said.
“Each club must take ownership to grow your side so that you help develop football.”
