SP PNG Hunters extended bench squad member Zechariah Selu made his Digicel ExxonMobil Cup debut on Sunday in Lae with the PRK Mendi Muruks and shared in the club’s impressive 26-16 win over the Hela Wigmen.
Having played no games in the country’s premier league competition, Selu was selected straight from the zone trials to join the Hunters this season but he looks to be a key member for the Muruks in this year’s campaign.
“It’s absolutely an amazing feeling at last making my debut in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup competition,” Selu told The National.
“I thought I would have done that before making the Hunters squad but it didn’t happen the way I expected.
“Big thanks to the coaching staff, especially the head coach for giving me the opportunity to be here and finally making my debut.
“We bagged our first win. That should be a boost for us to keep on working on improving our performance each round every weekend moving forward.”
Muruks head coach Andrew Andiki confirmed the availability of the young halfback in the squad for this season with a few other experienced campaigners in the likes of Pasala Kolo, Mark Tony, Ismael Waine, Agiru John Ako and Ishmael Balkawa.
“He’s (Selu) got the potential to play the game and getting him onboard to join the team can help him identify a few more areas that he can be good at,” Andiki said.
“His attitude and behaviour on and off the field is great and that’s what we want. We want well-disciplined players in camp.”
