A JAPANESE aircraft machine gun from the World War II discovered in Lae has been handed over to the National Museum and Art Gallery (NMAG).
The war relic was found last month by a construction crew working on the Angau hospital redevelopment site.
Australian High Commissioner to PNG Bruce Davis handed the relic to museum director Andrew Moutu last Friday.
It is believed to have come from a Japan warplane used between 1942 and 1943.
Moutu highlighted the importance of conserving military artefacts.
“Military heritage artefacts provide a physical link to the past and serve as touchstones to help us remember and retell stories from the war,” he said.
“NMAG is pleased to add this significant item to our collections.”
The Angau Hospital redevelopment project scheduled for completion late next year is part of the PNG-Australia partnership commitment to strengthening healthcare in the country.
