MACHINERY, trucks and other operations of mining and forestry companies will soon be registered by the Government’s Motor Vehicle Insurance Ltd (MVIL), says Prime Minister James Marape.
He said this was part of the reform that would take place with legislations and soon to be amended in next Parliament sitting in April.
According to MVIL managing director Michael Makap, the amendment would include the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act and Motor Vehicles (Basic Protection Compensation) Act.
Marape said: “As part of my reform agenda, all mining, forestry companies , those who operate machineries and those who move with the driver, MVIL will take account of all these.
“There will be no more vehicles operating freely in the country.
“We will make it happen, reform without breaking any laws.
“We are looking at increasing insurance premiums, we are looking at what we can compensate, to give comfort to the people, from K5,000 we might now move it to K10,000.”
State Enterprises Minister William Duma said Cabinet met and approved amendments to the existing legislations and structures.

  • That is a costly exercise which I believe will have a negative impact on mining and forestry businesses. Stop using this excuse that drivers are involved as you don’t feed the drivers on a day to day basis. It is their employment that is feeding them and their families.
The ministers should all volunteer to have their salaries decreased by 20-30% and see how they survive.

Instead the government should look at ways to generate more income from the limited resource’s like SOE’s.
One example is PNG Power. Why can’t they invest more on this by connecting every village in the rural areas of PNG. Believe me, people in the village have money. Another example is Telecommunication (BMobile & Telikom)
